You were 'spot on' Doohie. It was a Red legged Partridge.... and I found :- "This bird is not a British native, but was introduced here in the second half of the 18th century strictly for sporting purposes. It is usually found in South Yorkshire, the Midlands and East Anglia." They have come all the way from Yorkshire to South Buckinghamshire and my garden" :) Thanks. B.
