Geese

I have been hearing the geese fly over for a few days now, mostly first thing in the morning or at dusk, coming from an easterly or north easterly direction. Last night I  heard them fly over in the dark and this afternoon they have been coming steadily wave after wave. Every year I get the same feelings of excitment when I hear the geese and I get very emotional. It's a wonderful feeling welcoming the geese back for the winter and I often have a tinge of saddness when they leave again in the spring. I've tried taking a photo of them, but the sky is so grey and I didn't have my camera handy for the ones which flew closer. Alright I'm not a photographer, but I tried. :-)

Does anyone else get so excited when they hear the geese coming that they do a dance around the kitchen shouting  "the geese are here, the geese are here" or am I just strange?

  1. I don't think you are strange at all. I only wish more people were interested in nature and all that is going on around us.
My fox visits every night and every night I get a tingle from just sitting quietly watching him. Keep as you are, there are not enough of us...

  2. I don't know if you have ever read Lord of the Rings, but you reminded me of - "The Eagles are coming! The Eagles are coming!" :)
I too have found if hard to photograph birds in flight or even atop of trees.
I managed with the Red legged Partridge as they are ground birds. I have been trying to get photos of Red Kites and also these green 'Parrots' which we have around here. All I end up with is a little speck at the top of a tree!

  3. Briony, You are lucky to be able to watch your fox every night. You don't have hens do you? :o)

Bernard, At least you know what the little speck at the top of the tree is. :o)

  4. Hello Doohie!
You're not strange at all. I get a tingle when the geese arrive too - and the occasional swan! It's a miracle that happens every year, and it feels such a privilege to witness it. I think it's wonderful.

  7. Hello John, A good excuse for a party. No need to be cold though, we'll go to my brother's garden and light the fire pit.

  8. Oh Doohie, please take care of them! I get very emotional when they leave here for the winter. When I hear the first goose in the spring,yep...it's dancing time. The crows come back first, then red winged blackbirds, then robins...I get so excited!!
Note to self...must get out more.
